South Carolina 2011 Tax-Free Back-to-School Weekend

Addition Math ProblemWhile I realize it is the middle of July, it is time to think about backpacks, pencils, and notebooks.  The area children are returning to school for the 2011-2012 School Year here in the Augusta Area the 2nd week in August.  The Tax Free Weekend for back-to-school shopping is August 5th -7th in South Carolina.  Since Augusta GA is on the border, we can all take advantage of this event by visiting the shops in North Augusta, Aiken or even further up the road in Columbia, SC.

The items that qualify for the tax-free savings are:

School Supplies

Clothing and Accessories

Footwear

Computers

Computer Equipment

The South Carolina Tax-Free weekend is right before schools starts in the Augusta Area (August 8th for both Richmond County and Columbia County), so hopefully you can get to the stores on time.  South Carolina students have another week to get things in order since they cannot start school until after the 3rd Monday in August.

Columbia County GA School Calendar for 2011 – 2012 & 2012 – 2013

The Columbia County School Board of Education members were busy this past fall.  Back on November 9, 2010 they passed the School Calendar for 2011 – 2012.  They do have a disclaimer which says the calendar is “subject to change based on legislative action.”  The First Day of School for the 2011 – 2012 school year is August 8th, 2011 and the Last Day of School is May 18th, 2012.

On December 14, 2010 the Board of Education members passed the Columbia County School Calendar for 2012 – 2013.  Again they have a disclaimer about the calendar could change based on legislative action.  The First Day of School will be August 7th, 2012 and the Last Day of School will be May 21st, 2013.

Just In – Columbia County GA 2010 – 2011 Approved School Calendar

Okay, for all of us that were concerned about the earlier than normal back-to-school start date in Columbia County GA Schools, the date is now August 9, 2010.   If you are like me and are in the process of planning out your summer vacation schedule and needing to coordinate who is going where and when they are going, this approved calendar is at least a help. Click the link to see the 2010 – 2011 Columbia County Ga School System calendar.  At least we know that the school start date is not Augusta 5, 2010 as was proposed by the school board.   Once again, the schools in Columbia County will be closed for the entire week of Thanksgiving.  This past year was the first year that the Fall Break was deleted in order to give all of Thanksgiving week off from school.  Happy Summer Planning everyone!

Columbia School Schedule for the 2010 – 2011 School Year

I was recently having a conversation with one of my neighbors here in Euchee Creek Subdivision, Grovetown GA about the upcoming school year and how to register. I thought this would be a great thing to share with you as well. Click here to view Columbia County Schools Proposed Schedule for 2010 – 2011 school year.The bad news is: registration for kids starting kindergarten in Columbia County was March 22, 2010 thru April 2, 2010. Good news is: They always have a late registration for children the week prior to school starting back in Columbia County!   This will give you the time to get all your necessary documents together!  Here are the items that you will need to enroll your child in the Columbia County GA School System:

Kindergarten and Elementary Schools :

  • Certified original of your child’s birth certificate
  • GA Form 3231 – Georgia Certificate of Immunization*
  • GA Form 3300 – Georgia Certificate of Eye, Ear and Dental Examination*
  • Proof of residency – current gas, water or electric bill showing name and service  address
  • Children eligible for enrolling into Kindergarten must be 5 years old by September 1.

Middle Schools: (Columbia Middle, Evans Middle, Greenbrier Middle, Harlem Middle, Lakeside Middle, Riverside Middle, and Stallings Island Middle)

  • Certified original of your child’s birth certificate
  • GA Form 3231 – Georgia Certificate of Immunization*
  • GA Form 3300 – Georgia Certificate of Eye, Ear and Dental Examination*
  • Proof of residency – current gas, water or electric bill showing name and service  address; lease or purchase agreement
  • Withdrawal Form – from previous school if you are enrolling during the school year
  • Copy of Social Security Card

High Schools: (Evans High, Greenbrier High, Grovetown High, Harlem High, and Lakeside High)

  • Certified original of your child’s birth certificate
  • GA Form 3231 – Georgia Certificate of Immunization*
  • GA Form 3300 – Georgia Certificate of Eye, Ear and Dental Examination*
  • Proof of residency – current gas, water or electric bill showing name and service  address
  • Withdrawal Form – from previous school if you are enrolling during the school year
  • Copy of Report Card or Copy of Transcript
  • Copy of Social Security Card

*Please note the required health forms are available from the Columbia County Health Department, Fort Gordon medical staff, or your private doctor.

If you are moving into the Columbia County GA area, you will need these documents to enroll.  Please see the list below of Columbia County Health Departments to obtain the necessary forms to enroll your child in school:

Back To School!

Grovetown High School

Grovetown SchoolAugust 10th marked the first day of school for not only my children, but the children in Columbia County, GA.  I’m not sure if those going back to school were happy about this, but I sure was!  My two children attending school are ages 9 and 16 which is a huge span!  My sixteen-year-old was more than happy to finally go back to school and my nine-year-old wasn’t too excited about it.  I guess he just isn’t old enough to miss the socializing part of attending school.

My daughter is another story.  She has missed seeing her friends even though they stay in contact constantly thru Facebook or texting via mobile phones.  She was also excited since she is attending the brand new high school, (Grovetown High School), this year as a junior.  Things seemed to be moving along at the new school with only a few hiccups.  She had to have two schedule changes but seems to be pleased with her teachers.  Everyone of the teachers and staff members we spoke with at the open house and registration event were all very helpful and accommodating!  I think with the positive attitudes the staff has at the new school even those small little hiccups will get resolved smoothly.  What a refreshing breath of fresh air!

I am hoping that this school year will be a great year for all the children, teachers, staff and parents.  I know that I am looking forward to the upcoming fall season as well as football!  Hopefully the cooler fresh air of fall will arrive sooner than later here in the CSRA.  If anyone is needing information please click on Columbia County Schools.

Tax Free Weekend is Here!!

The Tax Free Weekend for back-to-school shopping is this weekend!  This will be a 4 day event this year in Georgia starting tomorrow, July 30th lasting until August 2nd 2009.

Here are the items that qualify for no tax this weekend:

Clothing: Clothing and Shoes that are $100 or less per item

School Supplies: General School Supplies of $20 or less per item.

Computers: Personal Computers and accessories of $1500 or less, computers over $1500 will be taxed at the regular rate.

Remember the First Day of School is August 10th in Columbia County, GA and August 7th in Richmond County, GA.
