History and cultural diversity is never more evident than in Downtown Augusta. Historic streets compliment the Riverwalk Augusta, which was constructed along the crest of the levee dividing Georgia from South Carolina. The Riverwalk area includes a convention center, park, shops, and The Morris Museum of Art, which showcases the work of many talented Southern artists. From the riverfront to the river, the Augusta Canal was constructed in 1845 and is currently the only industrial canal in the American South still being used. The National Heritage Area features many historical exhibits as well as outdoor recreation activities including boat tours, canoeing, kayaking, and rowing.
Augusta hosts several special events that draw thousands of people to this charming Southern city. Each April, the best of the best golfers converge on Augusta to compete in the profession’s most prestigious match – the Masters Tournament. Each year, more than 100 teams from 25 states compete in the “World’s Richest Drag Boat Race.” During the summer months, residents also enjoy watching their minor league team, the Augusta Green Jackets, circle the diamond.
For those who prefer cultural events to sports, Augusta also has its fair share of ballet, opera, drama, choral societies, art galleries, and museums. The Arts in the Heart of Augusta is an annual festival that celebrates art, culture, and food from different ethnic groups. On the first Friday of each month, local and national talent, artisans, and other vendors line up along Artists Row to display their creative and unique ware. If you can’t find what you’re looking for there, Surrey Center, Augusta Exchange, and Mullins Crossing offer a wide selection of alternative shops.
