Located approximately 10 miles west of Augusta is the quaint, affluent town of Evans. Ranked by Money Magazine as the 32nd “Best Place to Live” in 2005, Evans awaits.
As part of the “Smart Development” initiative established by Columbia County, 20 percent of the county’s land is designated for green space and recreational facilities are developed with the resident in mind. A network of bike paths crisscross throughout the area, and it is not uncommon to see neighbors get together for events within the various communities. The town’s dedication to providing its residents with a quality living environment has carried over to include recreation.
The Evans Government Center is a new courthouse complex that includes a library and performing arts theater. With the various community events, outdoor concerts, family-friendly festivals, and live performances, the town center has become a popular gathering place for many citizens living in Evans.
To the north of Evans lies J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake, also known as Clarks Hill Lake. This lake and its surrounding land of over 79,000 acres is the largest man-made lake east of the Mississippi River with over more 71,000 acres of water and 1,200 miles of shoreline that is longer than the entire U.S. eastern seaboard. With all of the outdoor recreational activities available, it is no wonder that this lake is one of the top 10 most visited Corps lakes in the United States. Evans also has numerous other lakes, ponds, and parks scattered throughout its neighborhoods.
Students in Evans receive a superb education through the Columbia County School System. This district is only one of three systems in the state that has earned an accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. After receiving that award in 2007, Expansion Magazine honored The Columbia County School System with a “Blue Ribbon” rating in 2008.
