In addition, Augusta received recognition in 2009 from Businessweek. Augusta ranked #11 on America’s 25 Next Recovering Job Markets, #23 on the Forty Strongest U.S. Metro Economies, and voted 19th in home price growth within the nation. The reports cited manufacturing, medicine, and the military as the key contributors for this acknowledgement. Also in 2009, Forbes ranked Augusta as the 5th Best Bang for the Buck City in the United States. Best Life Magazine ranked Augusta the 85th Best Place to Raise a Family in 2008, and Where to Retire Magazine ranked Augusta number four among the United States’ low-cost cities to retire in 2005. In addition, a 2008 report from MSN revealed that Augusta was ranked number 16 of 66 cities where buying instead of renting makes sense.
History and cultural diversity is never more evident than in Downtown Augusta. Historic streets compliment the Riverwalk Augusta, which was constructed along the crest of the levee dividing Georgia from South Carolina. For enlisted personnel, Fort Gordon, the largest communications and electronics training center in the world, spans over 57,000 acres and employees approximately 30,000 people.
